I give affection back on my terms. I am loved, appreciated, and utterly indispensable.

I am thrilled to be  in my kingdom—the backyard. The sun hits just right, the breeze is perfect, and I get to survey my domain like the eight-pound overlord I am. Today, I had the ultimate luxury: Toni, who is warm and wonderful (Texan warmth, just like my California roots, obviously), let me sit on her knee. Yes. Me. On her knee. She appreciates me, which is exactly how it should be. I basked in the attention, tail high, ears perfectly poised, because let’s be honest, I am adorable and deserving of admiration.

The garden, of course, is where I shine. Emma made her little stream with daylilies, and I patrolled it thoroughly—snooping on any intruders, sniffing out trouble, and making sure all the plants knew I approve. Toni and I had lunch with Emma.

Later, Emma took me for a walk. I tolerated the leash, of course, because walking with Emma is just another chance to flaunt my grace. Sitting on Toni’s knee remains the highlight. Warmth, admiration, attention—all the things a sophisticated California dog deserves. And let me be clear: I give affection back on my terms. I am loved, appreciated, and utterly indispensable.

Tomorrow? Whatever Emma plan. I will supervise, approve, and be charming. Because that is my job, my purpose, and frankly, my destiny.
